Cartoon by John Heim.
We read a book (or watch a movie) about cats, and we meet and talk about it. Everyone is welcome to join! It's a free, online event, once every season.
During one of our weekly science meetings to discuss progress on a research project, Jasmine, one of our volunteer scientists—somewhat out of the blue—suggested we should read the book We'll Prescribe You a Cat from Syou Ishida. This turned out to be a brilliant suggestion and the idea of a cat book club was born!
We meet once every season, via Google Meet, and we discuss a novel (fiction or non-fiction) about cats. You can either actively participate in the discussion or just lean back and listen in. Cameras can be off or on, whatever you prefer and there's no need to introduce yourself.
We will have a Cat Book Club every first Saturday in March, June, September and December. The next Cat Book Club will be on Saturday 6 September at 4 p.m. (CT). The link to join will be shared here several hours prior to the event. If you wish to receive a calendar invite, please send an email to meow[at]cowboycatranch[dot]org. People who joined in the past will automatically receive a calendar invite with the link.
At the end of the meeting we will pick a book for the next book club.
Cat's People
On Saturday September 6th, we'll be discussing Tanya Guerrero's novel Cat's People, published in April of this year.
“An uplifting tale of friendship, kindness, and connection . . . This joyful story of the unlikely friendship between five strangers and one remarkable cat is a must-read for cat lovers.”
The Cat Who Came In off the Roof
On Saturday the 7th of June in 2025 we talked about The Cat Who Came In off the Roof (1970) written by by the legendary Dutch writer Annie M. G. Schmidt. The book has been translated into 29 other languages. While also fun for adults, it's a gem for older children.
You can watch the cinematic adaptation of the book, Miss Minoes, for free on Amazon. If you wish to see the original non-dubbed, Dutch version with English subtitles, please contact us.
We highly recommend it! 4 out of 5 stars.
