A catio is a popular term used for outdoor enclosures for cats. The term originates from patios that were enclosed to create a safe outdoor living space for people's indoor cats. A patio is an outdoor space adjacent to the house, at ground level. However, decks (elevated) and porches (covered) can also be enclosed to offer cats a safe way to enjoy the outdoors, without causing damage to the wildlife.
The goal of this page is to inspire cat guardians to build an outdoor enclosure for their cat. It might give you ideas or answer some of the (technical) questions you may have had. If after reading this page you still have questions, please contact us by email (meow@cowboycatranch.org). We are happy to help if we can.
Our first catio, in Riverside, CA. We designed and built it ourselves. We were renting the house, so we made sure there was not a nail or screw that went into the wall or floor. We built it in 2015, one year after we had adopted our first cats, Aguereberry and Zappa.
Snow in the catio!
Harvey enjoying snow in her outdoor enclosure! Yes, snow in South-Central Texas!
We got about two inches of snow in 2017 and ten inches in 2021.
